How to get your export from Instagram

It's Instagram's own "download your information" flow — no third party involved. In the Instagram app:

  1. Open Instagram and go to your profile.
  2. Tap the menu (☰, top right).
  3. Tap Accounts Center.
  4. Tap Your information and permissions.
  5. Tap Download your information.
  6. Tap Download or transfer information.
  7. Select the account you want the list for.
  8. Choose Some of your information (not "All available information" — that takes far longer and is much bigger).
  9. Tick only Followers and following. Leave everything else unticked.
  10. Choose Download to device, then set:
    • Format: JSON — not HTML. An HTML export doesn't carry the data this tool reads, and you'd have to start over.
    • Date range: All time — see the warning below.
  11. Tap Create files.

Instagram emails you a download link when the files are ready. That can take anywhere from a few minutes to about a day — it's out of anyone's control. The download arrives as a ZIP: drop that ZIP straight onto this page. You don't need to unzip it, and you don't need to hunt for the JSON files inside.

The date range matters more than anything else here. Any range other than All time makes Instagram silently drop your oldest followers from the file — they're simply not in it. Those people then look exactly like accounts that don't follow you back, and there is no honest way to tell the difference. FollowCheck detects the fingerprint of a date-capped export and refuses to show you a list rather than show you a wrong one, so a capped download just costs you the wait. Set the range to All time the first time.
